About Us
iT TAKES A VILLAGE
My name is Tezeta, and I am the Founder and Owner of A Touch of Help.
I grew up in a family of 6, surrounded by my four siblings, as well as extended family and family friends. There were always children in our home.
My family was one of the first generations of our family tree to move here to Canada. With that, we knew we didn’t have a lot, but we had what we needed to get by. Especially our community.
With my Father being a student and my Mother working multiple jobs, bills were high and childcare was extremely difficult to find and afford. We had to rely on our community for help. We would either go to relatives or family friends to be looked after, or our family would at times take on the responsibility of watching other kids in our community. Our community worked together to help us all get by.
As time went on, my older sister and I grew and didn’t need the childcare anymore. We started taking on the responsibility of caring for our younger siblings as well as other children. Personally, there was never a question of ‘”why” I had to do this, I just enjoyed being around the kids and doing my part. Our home was always filled with a lot of love and memories. As we all grew, it created many friendships and bonds with the children of our community to this day.
Fast forward to now, I have my husband, 2 kids of my own, and a dog. I was a Licensed Practical Nurse for several years, and managed to work different shifts, but once I had my kids, shift work became a battle. With my husband and I both being shift workers, there was a lack of resources for childcare beyond typical business hours. As much as I loved Nursing, I decided to follow my other passion, which was to work with children. I opened up a daycare in my home to be able to be there for my kids, and provide for my family. While working from home, most of my daycare kids were from the same neighbourhood. It again felt as though I was helping my little community and creating a bond and memories.
Although I was happy with where I was in life, I couldn’t help but think why our city didn’t have many resources for childcare beyond traditional business hours. I thought about my fellow colleagues with children that had to figure out childcare while they worked the evening or night shift. I thought about all the workers that start their shifts at 6 in the morning and needed to get there little ones up, dressed, and dropped off so early in the day (especially on those cold winter days). What about parents that just want a little date night with their significant other, but can’t find someone to watch the kids? What if I could provide care in the comfort of their own home, anytime of day? I wanted to make things a little easier for families and provide A Touch of Help with their day-to-day routines.
Thank you to all my supporters, clients, friends and family who have all watched and influenced my growth in all that I do. It truly does take a village.
